Cisco SFP-10G-ZR
10GBASE-ZR SFP10G Module for SMF, Original Cisco
Product Highlights
When your network demands high-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity across distances that standard LR or ER optics simply cannot reach, the Cisco SFP-10G-ZR delivers the answer. This original Cisco SFP+ transceiver module provides reliable 10GBASE-ZR connectivity over single-mode fiber (SMF, G.652) at distances up to approximately 80 kilometers — making it ideal for metropolitan area networks, data center interconnects, and service provider backhaul links where intermediate signal regeneration is not practical.
The SFP-10G-ZR is a multirate module supporting 10GBASE-ZR, 10GBASE-ZW, and OTU2/OTU2e protocols, giving network architects the flexibility to deploy it across Ethernet and Optical Transport Network (OTN) applications. Operating at a 1550nm wavelength with a cooled EML laser transmitter and APD photodiode receiver, it delivers the optical power budget needed for ultra-long-haul links while maintaining signal quality.
Built-in Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) enables real-time tracking of critical parameters including optical output power, input power, temperature, laser bias current, and supply voltage — empowering proactive network management and rapid troubleshooting. As a hot-swappable SFP+ module with a dual LC/PC connector, the SFP-10G-ZR integrates seamlessly into any compatible Cisco platform's SFP+ port, supporting a pay-as-you-populate deployment model that protects your infrastructure investment.
Features & Benefits
Ultra-Long-Range 80km Connectivity
The SFP-10G-ZR supports link lengths of up to approximately 80 kilometers on standard single-mode fiber (G.652), eliminating the need for costly signal repeaters or regenerators on metro and regional spans. This extended reach makes it the go-to transceiver for connecting geographically dispersed buildings, campuses, and data centers across a metropolitan area.
Multirate Protocol Flexibility
Supporting 10GBASE-ZR, 10GBASE-ZW, and OTU2/OTU2e, this module adapts to both Ethernet and OTN transport requirements. This multirate capability simplifies inventory management and provides a single optic solution for diverse network architectures — from enterprise 10GbE to service provider optical transport.
Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM)
Real-time monitoring of optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage is available via a standard 2-wire serial interface per SFF-8472. DOM enables proactive fault detection, performance trending, and rapid root-cause analysis — reducing mean time to repair and preventing costly outages on critical long-haul links.
Hot-Swappable SFP+ Design
The SFP-10G-ZR plugs directly into any Ethernet SFP+ port on a compatible Cisco switch or router without requiring a power-down cycle. This hot-swap capability minimizes maintenance windows and supports non-disruptive upgrades, keeping your network available during planned changes.
Cisco Quality Identification
As an original Cisco transceiver, the SFP-10G-ZR includes Cisco's quality identification (ID) feature, enabling the host platform to verify that the module is certified and tested by Cisco. This ensures full platform support, complete DOM functionality, and eligibility for Cisco SMARTnet service coverage.
Deployment Scenarios
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Backbone
Connect multiple office buildings, campus locations, or points of presence across a city with high-speed 10GbE links spanning up to 80km. The SFP-10G-ZR eliminates the need for intermediate amplification on metro dark fiber runs, reducing infrastructure complexity and recurring costs.
Data Center Interconnect (DCI)
Establish resilient, high-bandwidth links between primary and disaster recovery data centers separated by tens of kilometers. The multirate OTU2/OTU2e support enables integration with optical transport platforms for managed DCI services over leased or owned fiber.
Service Provider Backhaul & Aggregation
Aggregate traffic from cell towers, remote access nodes, or customer premises equipment back to the core network over long-distance single-mode fiber. The 80km reach and DOM diagnostics provide the reliability and visibility service providers require for SLA-backed transport services.
Enterprise Campus Core-to-Distribution Links
For large enterprise campuses or multi-site organizations with buildings spread across wide geographic areas, the SFP-10G-ZR provides a single-hop 10G connection that simplifies the network topology and reduces latency compared to multi-hop alternatives.

Compatibility Notes
The Cisco SFP-10G-ZR is supported across a wide range of Cisco platforms including Catalyst, Nexus, ASR, and ISR series devices. Not all platforms support every transceiver module — always verify compatibility using the Cisco 10 Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver Modules Compatibility Matrix (document OL-6974) at cisco.com before deployment.
Important: When deploying on fiber spans shorter than 40km, an inline optical attenuator must be used to prevent overloading and permanently damaging the receiver. Only LC/PC or LC/UPC patch cords are supported — APC connectors are not supported.
