Cisco SFP-10G-LR-S
10GBASE-LR SFP Module, Enterprise-Class, Original Cisco
Product Highlights
Extending 10 Gigabit Ethernet between buildings, across a campus, or into a metro ring shouldn't mean compromising on reliability or breaking the budget. The Cisco SFP-10G-LR-S is an enterprise-class 10GBASE-LR SFP+ transceiver module purpose-built for long-range single-mode fiber deployments on Cisco Catalyst switching platforms.
Operating at 1310 nm with a DFB laser transmitter, the SFP-10G-LR-S supports link lengths of up to 10 kilometers over standard ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber through a duplex LC connector. As part of Cisco's S-Class optics portfolio, it delivers the same proven 10GBASE-LR optical performance in a cost-optimized package tailored for enterprise Ethernet environments — note that this module supports Ethernet protocol only and does not support FCoE, OTN, or WAN-PHY.
Built-in Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) per SFF-8472 gives network administrators real-time telemetry on transmit and receive power levels, laser bias current, module temperature, and supply voltage — enabling proactive troubleshooting before issues impact users. The module is fully hot-swappable, so upgrades and replacements happen with zero downtime. Whether you're building out a new Catalyst 9000-series campus fabric or refreshing uplinks on legacy Catalyst 3850 stacks, the SFP-10G-LR-S delivers dependable 10G connectivity at an enterprise-friendly price point.
Features & Benefits
Long-Range 10G Connectivity
The SFP-10G-LR-S supports 10 Gbps data rates over distances up to 10 km on standard single-mode fiber (G.652). This makes it ideal for inter-building links, campus backbones, and metro-edge connections where multimode fiber simply can't reach.
Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM)
Compliant with SFF-8472, the module reports real-time TX/RX optical power, laser bias current, temperature, and supply voltage. Network management platforms can poll these values via SNMP, enabling proactive fault detection and reducing mean time to repair.
Enterprise S-Class Design
Cisco's S-Class designation identifies this as a cost-optimized transceiver qualified for Cisco Catalyst switching platforms. It delivers the same 10GBASE-LR optical specifications as the standard SFP-10G-LR but at a lower price point for enterprise Ethernet-only deployments.
Hot-Swappable & Standards-Based
The SFP+ form factor is hot-swappable, allowing field replacement without powering down the host device. Compliance with IEEE 802.3ae and the SFP+ MSA ensures optical interoperability with other 10GBASE-LR endpoints, including XENPAK, X2, and XFP interfaces on the far end of the link.
Cisco Quality Identification
The module includes Cisco's quality ID feature, enabling the host platform to verify that the transceiver is a certified, genuine Cisco optic. This ensures full support coverage and eliminates compatibility warnings in the CLI.
Deployment Scenarios
Campus Backbone & Inter-Building Links
Connect Catalyst access or distribution switches across buildings separated by up to 10 km of single-mode fiber. The SFP-10G-LR-S provides reliable 10G uplinks for aggregating traffic from multiple access closets back to the campus core.
Enterprise Data Center Interconnect (Short-Haul)
Link Catalyst-based aggregation switches within or between nearby data center facilities over single-mode fiber. DOM telemetry helps operations teams monitor link health in real time and respond to degradation before it impacts application performance.
Branch Office WAN Edge Uplinks
Equip Catalyst switches at branch sites with 10G fiber uplinks to service provider handoffs or dark fiber connections. The S-Class pricing makes it cost-effective to deploy across dozens of remote locations.

Compatibility Notes
Supported Platforms: The SFP-10G-LR-S is qualified on Cisco Catalyst switching platforms with SFP+ ports, including the Catalyst 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500, and 9600 series, as well as legacy Catalyst 3650, 3850, and 3560-X switches.
Not Supported On: Cisco Nexus (3000/5000/7000/9000), ASR, ISR, and Firepower platforms — use the standard SFP-10G-LR for those devices.
Protocol Support: Ethernet only. The SFP-10G-LR-S does not support FCoE, OTN, or WAN-PHY protocols.
Fiber Requirement: Standard OS2 / ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber with duplex LC/UPC patch cables. For very short patch runs (< 2 m), an inline optical attenuator (5–10 dB) is recommended to avoid receiver saturation.
Always verify your specific platform and IOS XE version against the Cisco 10G Transceiver Compatibility Matrix.
