Deploying converged voice, data, and video services at the network edge demands a switch that combines robust Power over Ethernet with intelligent Layer 3 routing — without consuming excessive rack space or budget. The Cisco Catalyst 3750-48PS-S (WS-C3750-48PS-S) delivers exactly that.

This 1RU stackable switch provides 48 Fast Ethernet 10/100 ports with IEEE 802.3af PoE and 4 SFP-based Gigabit Ethernet uplinks, making it an ideal access-layer platform for midsize organizations and enterprise branch offices. With up to 370W of PoE power, it can drive IP phones, wireless access points, and security cameras directly from the switch — eliminating the cost and complexity of dedicated power infrastructure.

At the heart of the Catalyst 3750 platform is Cisco StackWise technology, a 32 Gbps high-speed stacking bus that lets you combine up to nine switches into a single, resilient logical unit managed through one IP address. The IP Base software image provides Layer 3 routing capabilities including static routing, RIP, EIGRP, and RIPng, enabling efficient inter-VLAN routing at the edge. With a 12K MAC address table, 128 MB DRAM, and comprehensive QoS and security features, the WS-C3750-48PS-S is a proven workhorse for converged network deployments.

Note: This product has reached Cisco End-of-Life status. It remains a cost-effective option for organizations maintaining existing Catalyst 3750 environments or deploying in non-critical roles where budget is a primary concern.

Features & Benefits
Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af)

All 48 Fast Ethernet ports support IEEE 802.3af PoE with up to 15.4W per port and a total switch PoE budget of 370W. Power IP telephones, wireless access points, and surveillance cameras directly from the switch, reducing cabling costs and simplifying deployment of converged services across the access layer.

Cisco StackWise Technology

The integrated 32 Gbps StackWise interconnect allows up to 9 Catalyst 3750 switches to operate as a single logical switch with unified management, a single configuration file, and a single IP address. This dramatically simplifies network operations and provides resiliency — if one stack member fails, the remaining members continue forwarding traffic.

Layer 3 Routing (IP Base)

The IP Base (Standard Multilayer Software) image enables Layer 3 routing at the access layer, including static routes, RIP-1, RIP-2, EIGRP, and RIPng for IPv6. Perform inter-VLAN routing locally rather than hair-pinning traffic to a centralized router, reducing latency and backbone congestion.

Enterprise-Class Security & QoS

Comprehensive security features including 802.1X port-based authentication, DHCP snooping, dynamic ARP inspection, and Access Control Lists (ACLs) protect the network edge. Advanced QoS with traffic shaping and prioritization ensures voice and video traffic receives the bandwidth and low latency it requires.

Compact 1RU Design

At just 1.73 inches tall and weighing approximately 6 kg (13.2 lb), the WS-C3750-48PS-S fits into a standard 1RU rack slot. Its compact footprint maximizes port density per rack unit, making it well-suited for space-constrained wiring closets and branch offices.

Deployment Scenarios
Enterprise Branch Office Access Layer

Deploy the WS-C3750-48PS-S as the primary access-layer switch in branch offices where IP phones, PCs, and wireless APs need PoE and Layer 3 inter-VLAN routing. StackWise technology lets you scale port density by adding additional units without increasing management complexity.

VoIP and Unified Communications Deployment

With 48 PoE-capable ports and QoS prioritization, this switch is purpose-built for powering and prioritizing Cisco IP phones. IEEE 802.3af compliance ensures reliable power delivery, while Layer 3 QoS policies guarantee voice quality even under heavy data traffic loads.

Wireless Access Point Infrastructure

Use the PoE budget to power up to 24 wireless access points at full 15.4W each (or more APs at lower power draw). The 4 SFP uplinks provide high-speed Gigabit connectivity back to the distribution or core layer, ensuring wireless traffic is not bottlenecked at the uplink.

Budget-Conscious Network Refresh or Lab Environment

As an End-of-Life product, the WS-C3750-48PS-S offers significant cost savings over current-generation switches. It is an excellent choice for lab environments, test networks, or non-critical production segments where Cisco IOS familiarity and PoE are needed without a premium price tag.
