Service providers and large enterprises managing high-volume voice infrastructure need a gateway platform that delivers density, reliability, and protocol flexibility without consuming excessive rack space. The Cisco AS5400XM Universal Gateway addresses exactly that need.
This AS5400XM Starter Kit includes the chassis with motherboard, 512MB DRAM (MEM-512M-AS5XM), 128MB CompactFlash (MEM-128CF-AS5XM), and a 19-inch rackmount kit (AS5400RM-19). It provides the foundational platform onto which you add your choice of power supply, trunk termination cards, and DSP feature cards to build a complete voice gateway tailored to your deployment.
The AS5400XM occupies just two rack units (2RU) and doubles the processing performance of the original AS5400 while maintaining backward compatibility with existing AS5400 and AS5400HPX trunk and universal port feature cards. It supports a wide range of PSTN signaling protocols — including SS7, CAS, and PRI — as well as gateway signaling via H.323, SIP, and MGCP, making it versatile across wholesale voice, prepaid calling, toll bypass, hosted IP telephony, and IVR deployments.
Note: This product has reached Cisco End-of-Life (EOL) status. It is available as refurbished/secondary-market inventory and is ideal for maintaining or expanding existing AS5400XM deployments cost-effectively.
Features & Benefits
High-Density 2RU Form Factor
The AS5400XM packs carrier-class voice gateway capabilities into just two rack units (3.5 inches of rack height). This compact footprint is ideal for colocation environments and mega POPs where rack space is at a premium, helping you reduce facility costs while maximizing port density.
Modular, Expandable Architecture
The chassis accepts trunk termination cards, universal port DSP cards, and high-density packet voice/fax feature cards. This modular design lets you configure the gateway for your exact capacity requirements — from a handful of T1/E1 trunks up to a full CT3 — and scale as demand grows.
Backward-Compatible Investment Protection
The AS5400XM supports existing Cisco AS5400 and AS5400HPX trunk termination and universal port feature cards. If you are upgrading from an older AS5400 chassis, you can migrate your existing cards into the XM platform and immediately benefit from doubled processing performance and enhanced memory.
Broad Protocol Support
With support for PSTN signaling (SS7/C7, CAS, R2, PRI), gateway signaling (H.323, SIP, MGCP), VoiceXML, RADIUS, TCL, and IVR, the AS5400XM adapts to virtually any voice network architecture. This protocol flexibility reduces the need for multiple specialized platforms.
Starter Kit — Build to Your Spec
This starter kit ships with the essential foundation: chassis, motherboard, DRAM, and flash memory. You select the power supply (AC or DC), trunk cards, and DSP modules that match your deployment, avoiding the cost of pre-configured bundles with components you don't need.
Deployment Scenarios
Wholesale Voice Termination
Service providers handling high-volume wholesale voice traffic can deploy the AS5400XM as a cost-effective TDM-to-IP gateway. Its high-density design and SS7 signaling support make it well-suited for interconnecting PSTN trunks with VoIP core networks at scale.
Prepaid Calling & IVR Services
The AS5400XM's support for TCL scripting, VoiceXML, and IVR enables service providers to deliver prepaid calling card platforms and interactive voice applications. The modular DSP architecture allows capacity to be matched precisely to subscriber demand.
Enterprise Toll Bypass & Branch Connectivity
Large enterprises with significant PSTN spend can deploy the AS5400XM to route inter-site voice traffic over their IP WAN, bypassing toll charges. Its compact 2RU chassis fits easily into existing data center racks alongside routing and switching infrastructure.
Spare Chassis for Existing AS5400XM Deployments
Organizations already running AS5400XM gateways can procure this starter kit as a cold spare or expansion chassis. Since the platform is EOL, securing spare hardware now ensures continuity of service without an immediate forklift upgrade.
