Managing multiple standalone switches across branch offices and campus access layers creates operational complexity — inconsistent configurations, fragmented monitoring, and limited redundancy. The Cisco C9200-STACK stack module eliminates these challenges by enabling Cisco Catalyst 9200 series switches to operate as a single, unified virtual switch.

The C9200-STACK is a plug-in stacking module designed for the Cisco Catalyst 9200 platform. It leverages Cisco's StackWise architecture to connect up to eight switches in a ring topology, delivering a single control plane and management plane across the entire stack. This means one IP address, one configuration file, and one point of management for up to 384 access ports — dramatically reducing administrative overhead.

With Stateful Switchover (SSO) enabled by default and a distributed forwarding architecture that programs QoS, security ACLs, and network services locally on each member switch, the C9200-STACK delivers enterprise-grade resiliency and wire-speed performance. Whether you're deploying in a branch office, campus access layer, or SMB environment, this stacking module provides the scalability and reliability that modern networks demand — all while protecting your existing Catalyst 9200 infrastructure investment.

Features & Benefits
Unified Stack Management

The C9200-STACK enables up to eight Catalyst 9200 switches to be managed as a single logical entity with one IP address and one configuration file. This dramatically simplifies day-to-day operations — reducing configuration drift, streamlining firmware upgrades, and cutting troubleshooting time across your access layer.

High-Availability Stacking with SSO

Stateful Switchover (SSO) is enabled by default when Catalyst 9200 switches are deployed in a stack. If the active switch fails, a standby member takes over seamlessly — preserving forwarding state and minimizing disruption. This modular-class redundancy ensures continuous network operations without manual intervention.

Distributed Forwarding Architecture

Network services such as QoS policies, security ACLs, and forwarding decisions are programmed and enforced locally on each stack member's hardware. This distributed approach delivers wire-speed switching performance across the entire stack, prevents centralized processing bottlenecks on the active switch, and optimizes stack-ring bandwidth utilization.

Flexible Ring Topology

The C9200-STACK supports both resilient and non-resilient ring topologies. In a full-ring configuration, the stack delivers maximum bandwidth and automatic path recovery if a link or member fails. This flexibility lets you design your stack architecture to match your physical infrastructure and availability requirements.

Plug-In Simplicity

As a plug-in module, the C9200-STACK installs directly into the rear stack port of a Catalyst 9200 switch. The straightforward installation reduces deployment time and allows you to add stacking capability to existing switches without replacing hardware — protecting your infrastructure investment.

Deployment Scenarios
Branch Office Access Layer

Stack multiple Catalyst 9200 switches in a branch office to create a single logical switch with unified management. This reduces the number of devices to monitor, simplifies configuration consistency across sites, and provides built-in redundancy for business-critical connectivity.

Enterprise Campus Access Aggregation

Deploy stacked Catalyst 9200 switches across campus wiring closets to consolidate up to 384 access ports under one management plane. The distributed forwarding architecture ensures wire-speed performance at every port, while SSO provides seamless failover for always-on campus networks.

SMB Network Scaling

Small and medium businesses can start with a single Catalyst 9200 switch and incrementally add stack members as the network grows — without redesigning the architecture. The C9200-STACK module enables pay-as-you-grow scalability while maintaining a single, simple management interface.

Compatibility Notes

Compatible Platforms:

  • Cisco Catalyst 9200 series switches (C9200 modular-uplink SKUs)

Important Compatibility Restrictions:

  • Not compatible with Catalyst 9200L (fixed-uplink) models — C9200L switches require the separate C9200L-STACK-KIT with StackWise-80 technology
  • Cannot mix C9200 and C9200L models in the same stack due to different stacking bandwidth
  • Stacking not available on C9200CX compact models
  • Cannot stack with other Catalyst series switches (e.g., Catalyst 2960-X, 2960-XR, or 9300)

Stacking Cables (sold separately as needed):

  • STACK-T4-50CM — 0.5m stacking cable
  • STACK-T4-1M — 1m stacking cable
  • STACK-T4-3M — 3m stacking cable

Frequently Asked Questions

The C9200-STACK supports stacking of up to 8 Cisco Catalyst 9200 series switches in a ring topology, all managed as a single logical switch with one unified control plane.

No. The C9200-STACK is designed for Catalyst 9200 modular-uplink models only. Catalyst 9200L fixed-uplink switches require the C9200L-STACK-KIT, which uses StackWise-80 technology. You cannot mix C9200 and C9200L models in the same stack.

The C9200-STACK is the stack module itself. Stacking cables (STACK-T4-50CM, STACK-T4-1M, or STACK-T4-3M) are required for connecting stack members and may need to be ordered separately depending on your configuration. Check the C9200-STACK-KIT if you need the complete kit with adapters and cable included.

Yes, you can mix different C9200 model variants (PoE, data, Multigigabit) and different network modules within the same stack. However, you cannot mix C9200 modular models with C9200L fixed models, nor can you stack with C9200CX or other Catalyst series switches.

Yes. Stateful Switchover (SSO) is enabled by default when Catalyst 9200 switches are deployed in a stack. If the active switch fails, a standby member takes over automatically, preserving forwarding state and minimizing network disruption.
