Deploying enterprise-grade routing in environments powered by -48V DC — such as telecom central offices, colocation facilities, and hardened field sites — demands hardware engineered for that infrastructure from the ground up. The CISCO3845-DC is the DC-powered variant of the Cisco 3845 Integrated Services Router, part of the proven Cisco 3800 Series ISR family.
This modular router ships with two built-in Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, one SFP slot for flexible fiber connectivity, four NME slots, four HWIC slots, two AIM slots, and four PVDM slots — providing extensive room to integrate switching, voice, security, and WAN services into a single chassis. It includes 512 MB of DRAM and 128 MB of Compact Flash, running Cisco IOS IP Base software.
The CISCO3845-DC is designed for medium-to-large branch offices and enterprise edge deployments where concurrent data, voice, and security services must be delivered at wire-speed T3/E3 rates. Its DC power supply makes it the right choice for sites where AC power is unavailable or where DC power distribution is standard. The Cisco 3845 chassis also supports internal redundant power with a second power supply for high-availability deployments.
Note: This product is End-of-Life (EOL). It remains a cost-effective option for maintaining or expanding existing Cisco 3800 Series deployments, and third-party maintenance support is widely available.
Features & Benefits
DC Power for Critical Infrastructure
The CISCO3845-DC ships with the PWR-3845-DC power supply, accepting -48V DC input. This makes it ideal for telecom central offices, remote huts, and data center environments where DC power distribution is standard. The Cisco 3845 chassis supports a second internal power supply for redundant operation, ensuring continuous uptime in mission-critical deployments.
Extensive Modular Expansion
With four NME slots, four HWIC slots, two AIM slots, and four PVDM slots, the Cisco 3845 offers one of the highest expansion densities in the ISR portfolio. Add EtherSwitch modules for Layer 2 switching, voice DSP modules for IP telephony, or WAN interface cards for serial, T1/E1, and DSL connectivity — all within a single 3RU chassis.
Integrated Security & VPN
The Cisco 3845 includes built-in hardware encryption acceleration and supports Cisco IOS Firewall, IPSec VPN, and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) features. These embedded security capabilities eliminate the need for standalone security appliances at the branch, reducing cost and complexity.
Converged Voice, Data & Video
Designed to deliver concurrent services at wire-speed T3/E3 rates, the Cisco 3845 supports voice gateway interfaces, Cisco CallManager Express, and video services. PVDM slots allow installation of packet voice DSP modules to scale voice termination density as your branch requirements grow.
Deployment Scenarios
Telecom Central Office / DC-Powered Facility
The CISCO3845-DC is purpose-built for environments with -48V DC power infrastructure. Deploy it in telecom COs, remote telecom huts, or colocation cages where DC power distribution is standard and AC power may not be available or practical.
Enterprise Branch Office WAN Edge
Consolidate routing, switching, security, and voice services into a single platform at the branch edge. The extensive module slots allow you to tailor the router to each site's specific WAN connectivity and service requirements, reducing the number of devices to manage.
Legacy Network Maintenance & Expansion
For organizations with existing Cisco 3800 Series deployments, the CISCO3845-DC provides a cost-effective way to add capacity or replace failed units without a full platform migration. Third-party maintenance contracts are widely available to extend operational life.
