Deploying secure site-to-site or remote-access VPN tunnels at the branch office demands a router that can handle encryption at line rate without sacrificing routing performance. The Cisco C3725-VPN/K9-EPII is a purpose-built VPN bundle based on the Cisco 3725 Multiservice Access Router, pre-configured with the AIM-VPN/EPII hardware encryption module, 256MB DRAM, and 128MB CompactFlash.
The AIM-VPN/EPII Advanced Integration Module offloads DES, 3DES, and AES encryption processing from the router's main CPU, delivering dramatically higher IPSec VPN throughput compared to software-only encryption. This frees CPU resources for concurrent services such as firewall inspection, intrusion prevention, QoS, and voice processing.
As part of the Cisco 3700 Series, the 3725 platform provides a highly modular architecture with two network module slots, three WIC slots, and two AIM slots — enabling flexible integration of WAN interfaces, switching modules, voice gateways, and additional security services. The included 19-inch rackmount kit and AC power supply make this bundle ready for immediate deployment in enterprise branch offices, remote sites, and lab environments requiring proven IPSec VPN connectivity.
Features & Benefits
Hardware-Accelerated VPN Encryption
The included AIM-VPN/EPII module provides hardware-based DES, 3DES, and AES encryption, offloading crypto processing from the main router CPU. This delivers up to 10x the performance of software-only encryption and reserves critical CPU resources for routing, firewall, and voice services running concurrently on the platform.
Modular Multiservice Architecture
The Cisco 3725 chassis offers two network module (NM) slots, three WAN interface card (WIC) slots, and two Advanced Integration Module (AIM) slots. This modular design lets you add serial WAN interfaces, T1/E1 connections, EtherSwitch modules, voice gateways, or additional security modules as your branch office requirements evolve — all within a compact 2RU footprint.
Integrated LAN Connectivity
Two on-board 10/100 Fast Ethernet ports provide built-in LAN connectivity without consuming any expansion slots. This integrated approach simplifies deployment and preserves modular slots for WAN and service modules.
Enhanced Memory Configuration
This bundle ships with 256MB DRAM (2x MEM3725-128D) and 128MB CompactFlash (MEM3700-128CF), providing ample resources for advanced Cisco IOS feature sets including IPSec, firewall, and IPS. The generous memory allocation supports larger routing tables and a higher number of concurrent VPN tunnels.
Rack-Ready Deployment
The C3725-VPN/K9-EPII ships with a 19-inch rackmount kit (ACS-3725RM-19), AC power supply (PWR-3725-AC), and AC power cord. Unbox, rack, configure, and deploy — no additional hardware purchases required to get started.
Deployment Scenarios
Branch Office VPN Gateway
Deploy the C3725-VPN/K9-EPII as a dedicated IPSec VPN gateway at branch offices connecting back to corporate headquarters. The AIM-VPN/EPII hardware encryption module ensures high-throughput encrypted tunnels without degrading routing or firewall performance on the same platform.
Multi-Service Branch Router
Leverage the 3725's modular architecture to consolidate routing, VPN, firewall, and voice gateway functions into a single 2RU platform. Add WIC and NM modules for serial WAN, T1/E1, or EtherSwitch connectivity to reduce the number of devices at the branch.
Lab and Training Environment
The Cisco 3725 remains a popular platform for CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE lab environments. This VPN bundle provides a cost-effective way to practice IPSec VPN configuration, IOS firewall setup, and modular router administration with real Cisco hardware.
Legacy Network Maintenance
Organizations still running Cisco 3700 Series infrastructure can use this bundle as a direct replacement or spare unit. The pre-configured VPN encryption module and upgraded memory ensure compatibility with existing deployments running advanced IOS security feature sets.
