Cisco 4OC12X/ATM-MM-SC
4-port OC12/STM4 Eng 3 ATM - 1x512MB default mem
Product Highlights
Service providers managing legacy ATM infrastructures need reliable, high-density line cards that deliver line-rate performance without sacrificing advanced traffic management. The Cisco 4OC12X/ATM-MM-SC is a 4-port OC-12/STM-4 ATM ISE line card designed for the Cisco 12000 Series (GSR) router platform, providing four 622 Mbps multimode fiber ATM interfaces with SC connectors.
Powered by Cisco's IP Services Engine (Engine 3) technology, this line card combines an extensive set of service-enabling edge features with advanced ATM traffic shaping and sophisticated IP-to-ATM quality-of-service (QoS) functions — all at line rate. Per-VC and per-VP traffic shaping with granularity down to 1 Kbps gives operators ultimate flexibility in delivering tiered services, private IP connectivity, and integrated data/voice/video offerings.
The 4OC12X/ATM-MM-SC ships with 512 MB of default memory and supports online insertion and removal (OIR) for non-disruptive maintenance. It is compatible with high-availability features including Route Processor Redundancy Plus (RPR+), Nonstop Forwarding (NSF), and Stateful Switchover (SSO). Note: This product is part of the Cisco GSR 12000 family, which has reached End-of-Life (EOL) status. It is available as a pre-owned or refurbished spare for sustaining existing deployments.
Features & Benefits
IP Services Engine (ISE) / Engine 3 Technology
The Cisco ISE architecture is a unique, edge-optimized programmable network processor that combines ASIC-level hardware performance with software flexibility. This enables the 4OC12X/ATM-MM-SC to deliver advanced ATM traffic management and IP/MPLS-to-ATM QoS at full line rate, without compromising port density or throughput.
Granular ATM Traffic Shaping & QoS
Per-VC and per-VP traffic shaping with granularity down to 1 Kbps allows service providers to craft precise, tiered service offerings. Combined with per-VC Modified Deficit Round Robin (MDRR) and per-VC low-latency queueing (LLQ), operators can guarantee bandwidth and prioritize latency-sensitive traffic such as voice and video over ATM.
Multimode Fiber / SC Connectivity
The multimode (MM) variant with SC-type duplex connectors is optimized for short-reach intra-facility and campus fiber runs. This simplifies cabling in co-location environments and central offices where multimode fiber infrastructure is already deployed.
High Availability & Non-Disruptive Operations
Online Insertion and Removal (OIR) allows technicians to hot-swap line cards without impacting live traffic on other slots. Support for Route Processor Redundancy Plus (RPR+), Nonstop Forwarding (NSF), and Stateful Switchover (SSO) ensures carrier-grade uptime for mission-critical ATM services.
512 MB Default Onboard Memory
Ships with 512 MB of default memory to support the ATM forwarding tables, VC/VP state, and QoS policy structures required for large-scale service provider deployments. Adequate memory is critical for maintaining stable performance under high VC-count configurations.
Deployment Scenarios
Service Provider ATM Edge Aggregation
Deployed at the carrier edge, the 4OC12X/ATM-MM-SC enables service providers to aggregate ATM traffic from access networks and deliver value-added services such as private IP connectivity, tiered bandwidth offerings, and integrated voice/video/data — all with per-VC QoS guarantees.
Legacy ATM Infrastructure Sustainment
Organizations maintaining existing Cisco GSR 12000 deployments can use this line card as a direct replacement spare to sustain ATM services while planning longer-term migration strategies. Its EOL status makes pre-owned units a cost-effective option for extending the operational life of legacy networks.
Central Office / Co-Location Short-Reach Links
The multimode fiber optics and SC connectors make this card well-suited for short-reach interconnects within central offices, data centers, or co-location facilities where multimode fiber is the standard cabling infrastructure.

Compatibility Notes
Platform Compatibility:
- Supported on all Cisco 12000 Series (GSR) routers, including the Cisco 12008, 12012, 12016, 12404, 12406, 12410, and 12416 chassis.
Installation Note for 12008/12012:
- When installing in a Cisco 12008 or 12012 chassis, a blank filler panel (part number 4OC12X/ATM-BLANK) must be installed in the adjacent slot. Refer to the Cisco 12000 Series ATM Line Card Installation and Configuration Guide for details.
EOL Status:
- The GSR Engine 3 line cards reached End-of-Sale on January 29, 2013. Cisco recommends migration to the Cisco XR 12000 Series SPA Interface Processors for continued support. This product is available as a pre-owned/refurbished spare only.
